What is Smudging?
Smudging is an ancient practice used by our ancestral elders incorporating cedar, sage or other dried herbs during ritual ceremonies for spiritual, medicinal and cultural purposes. It is often performed to recalibrate the energy of the home, an office, an object, a sacred space or a person. This is accomplished by burning cedar, sage or other combination of herbs in a focused intentional way to cleanse any stuck energy and replenish with positive healing energy. During a smudge ceremony we invite peace and harmony into a person’s life or environment.
How to Smudge?
The most important tool you will ever have is a clear strong positive intent. Do this as you hold the cedar and sage in your hands placing your intent and energy into the smudge of your choice.
Once you have placed your intent, light one end of the smudge, allowing it to catch fire and burn for several seconds. Once the flame extinguishes, gently blow on it to fan the embers. Continue to focus on your intention as you observe the embers glow and continue to burn. Always lay the smudge in a heat resistant smudge pots or abalone shell to catch the ashes as it burns. It is important to respect the elements we work with during ritual.
Smudge until the energy feels lighter. Pay attention to your smudge it will show you how dense the energy of the place is. For example if you have difficulty burning your herbs then this is often a great indicator that the energy surrounding the person, place, or thing is in need of a lot of clearing and healing.
As the smoke continues to rise fan the smudge over yourself and around your sacred space and objects. Envision all toxic stuck energy being lifted away with the smoke. You can pray, chant or use an instrument if you’d like. Then face the corners, beginning with the East, then the South, the West and the North, returning once again to the East. I usually love to take this time to thank the Elements for the gifts they bestow in my life, as well as invite them in.
