One of the things that immediately caught my attention is the Dunce cap he wears – it has its origins in someone named John Duns Scotus. Later called Doctor Subtilis (Subtle Doctor) for his penetrating and subtle manner of thought, had his students – called duns men wear these caps. He believed that wearing these caps increased knowledge. But as all things external it is only meant to act as a symbol to activate and awaken that, which is internal.
Though today is seen as the mark of the slow learner – in the mystical world – like the symbol of the pinecone – the conical hat was symbolic of the Magus and the expansion of knowledge. As those of us who are intuitively sharp discover, spiritual knowledge, answers and wisdom arrive rather slowly. In that process of waiting we learn patience and surrender to the divine flow.
His red cap is a metaphor for the all-seeing EYE of the Goddess. It is a secret symbol of the womb that is awakened. We co-create reality through the power of our womb regardless of gender.
A woman’s clitoris is much larger than it appears externally. The power of the sacred feminine is in her sacred hearthstones that cradle the womb. For the masculine principle his – womb – his power center is his skull. Both the masculine and feminine energies when interlocked become the KEY – the Ankh – that unites the two as one.
His crown expands, deeply penetrates, going beyond the limited knowledge of the brain and taps into universal consciousness. Through our crown we reach out towards the cosmos – we merge with the Universe – with our inner High Priestess. The cap he wears represents the funnel – the apex – like the pyramid – that allows our minds to receive light (knowledge) and powerful universal truths. It is with this knowledge brought about by our continued desire for self-discovery that brings about a new self-based definition or a new way of relating to self and others.
Since the pentacles represent wealth – the material world and our connection to our ancestors – the infinity band is a metaphor for the continuous investment of our wealth into what truly makes our hearts sing and dance! This is how we keep the Universal flow of energy near and accessible to use for our projects and passions whatever that may be for you.
In a reading involving the two of pentacles, we are asked to be flexible in embracing the paradox of limitation and expansion. Each has its purpose – limitation teaches endurance, patience, and surrender. Expansion rewards our efforts with growth, knowledge, and wisdom.
Two of Pentacles reminds us to slow down so that we can maintain balance as we handle any additional responsibilities we choose to take on. When we slow down the movement forward flows with ease and grace.
In life, this card encourages us to see the humor in life. Things don’t always move in the direction we want because it is moving in the direction needed for our personal growth.
To learn and absorb deep truths, we must unlearn all our conditioned programming set down by our ancestors. To break out of their mold and be authentic!
Finally, two of Pentacles also advises being comfortable in the NOT knowing – to be friends with constant change as it is the ONLY REAL permanence. Play the FOOL – after all the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing, and then realizing YOU really don’t NEED to. For wisdom flows through you not from a place of thinking but in being in the awareness of the present moment.
